Panchakarma, the five
renowned
therapeutic measures as a whole is considered as the most
meritorious method to be adopted in the field of preventive,
curative, and palliative therapy in health and disease. Sage charaka says ' Panchakarma is the wholesome treatment
equally beneficial for the upkeep of positive health for the
healthy person and cure for the diseased since the process
of panchakarma will increase te strength of the body and
longevity.

Panchakarma includes five eliminative type of treatment which are Vamana
(Emesis) Virechana (Prgative), Vasthi (colonics), Nasya (nasal
Administration), and Raktha moksha (Blood letting therapy.)

Panchakarma is not only eliminative but acts also as
nutritive and increases body strength. snehana-that is
internal and external oleation therapies and swedana-fomentation
are the preparative treatment before the main treatment is
introduced. Sodhana- is the elimination procedure
which purifies the whole body channels. |

Panchakarma purifies the body srota by specific method and
makes bod perceptible for new growth and helps to increase
immunity by accelerating the nutrition and disallowing the
loding of disease agents.

The mode of action of panchakarma in curing disease is:
Vamana or emesis eliminates the vitiated kapha and cures the
allied disease. Virechana or purgation eliminates the vitiated
pitta and cures the diseases caused by it. Vasthi cleans all the
vessels of the body and facilitates the smooth function of vata.
nasya or errhine therapy cleans the channels in the cranial
region and is a specific treatment for the diseases of the head.
The most appreciable merit of the panchakarma treatment is that,
when any ailment is cured by this procedd it will not re occur.
Sage charaka says ' the doshas alleviated by fasting and
digestive drugs , do get aggrevated sometimes. but those cured
by elimination therapies do not re occur.

Siro vasthi:

paralysis, migraine, head ache, insomnia, memory loss, mental
stress, dry nose, dryness of the eye and also for cervical
spondylosis. Though useful in all Dosha types of ailments, the
treatment is more useful in Vatta related diseases.

Siodhara: This is an oil based treatment
effective for people suffering from Parkinson's disease, complex
headaches, insomnia, depression, sleeplessness, and various
other neurological disorders. The treatment involves lavish
pouring of medicated oil on the person's forehead. Since
treatment is done directly on the head, its therapeutic
properties activate the brain cells directly. |

Pichu: Retention of oil-soaked cotton cloth on
the head is called Siropichu. Such oil retentions pacify the
nerves and brain cells, and improve the person's memory level. A
medicine rich blend of herbs, milk, and oil is used for the
treatment. This therapy has profound benefits in treating
ailments such as inflammation and skin crack on the head and
stiffness of eyes. With appropriate medicines, siropichu also

Tarpana: Retaining warm medicated ghee over the
eyes is termed netratharpanam. Many problems related to the eyes

treatments like netratharpanam rectify various diseases. The
treatment is excellent for eye diseases and strain caused due to
prolonged use of T.V, computer, etc. Short sight, cataract,
blurring of vision, dry eye, glaucoma, pain in the eye, headache

Patra Pinda Sweda | Choorna Pinda Sweda | Jambeera Pinda
Sweda: Pinda sweda is a highly praised variety of
sudation procedure, where chopped medicinal leaves are tied like
a pouch, is then heated over warm oil and massed over whole body
or over affected body part. This particular treatment is
specially effective in rheumatism, bone and joints, paralysis
etc. |

Shashtika pinda sweda: This is a procedure,
where medicated cooked rice is tied in a piece of cloth is then
warmed with boiling medicated milk is then applied over the
body. This procedure is used in the curative aspect of nervous
disorders, etc. |

Talapothichil: In Thalapothichil, the person's
scalp is completely applied with high value medicinal pastes.
This enables the medicines to penetrate faster into the brain
cells. The healing properties of the herbs also calm down the

for its ability to heal problems related to the head and neck
regions. Alzheimer's disease, migraine, certain psychosomatic

Takradhara: The treatment starts with a mild,
full body oil massage to loosen the nerves and muscles. After
this, medicated buttermilk is poured on the person's forehead

the mind and soul. A prolonged treatment for 2-3 weeks not only
removes any ailments, but also recoups the total mental status

Udvarthana: Body massage using herbal powder is
called udvarthanam. The treatment is good for diseases like
diabetic neuropathy, paralysis, obesity, skincare, sciatica,
indigestion and sclerosis of blood vessels. The massage
activates the nerves and increases blood flow to the impaired
parts of the body. Udvarthanam is also an important health
preserving massage. As the massage promotes active blood flow,
it revitalizes and reconditions the body, thus preserving its
strength, skin texture, and natural elasticity. Fat reduction is
one of the significant benefits in cases of obesity. |

Kati vasthi: Kateevasthi is done by retaining
certain amount of warm medicated oil on the low back of the
body. This is one of the most effective treatments for many
degenerative disorders of that area. Diseases like chronic back
ache, sciatica, rheumatoid arthritis, lumbago, osteoarthritis,
weakness of lower limbs etc. are treated using Kateevasthi.
Being a localized form of treatment, its effects are superior.
First it stops the degeneration of the disc which causes the
back pain, and in the later stages of treatment, the
degeneration even starts reducing. |

Pizhichil: Pizhichil or Thailadhara is a
continuous showering and massaging process of the whole body
with warm medicated oil. This activates the muscles and nerve
endings. The warm oil shower also allows active perspiration
thus expelling toxins and wastes from the body. Hence its
rejuvenating effects are also remarkable. |
